Ileana L. Cavanagh, DMD, MS
Meet Dr. Cavanagh
One of the most exciting aspects of orthodontics I see is the self-confidence and growth in patients as their smiles improve. I feel I am the luckiest person to have the opportunity to help them as they become a part of our orthodontic family.
I have always loved solving puzzles, and correcting a bite is a lot like solving a puzzle, especially because each patient is so different. Diagnosing a case and planning the correct treatment with the proper sequence of appliances is very enjoyable. The fact that these treatments can create a beautiful smile and also dramatically affect a person’s self-esteem and boost their confidence is something that gives me pleasure every day.
Education and Continuing Education
I have been practicing orthodontics since 1997 and opened my office in Colts Neck in 1999. In 2016, I opened my office in Shrewsbury. I knew I would be an orthodontist at a young age when my orthodontic treatment helped me break out of my own shell. Being able to help someone gain self-confidence is a very important reason why I became an orthodontist.
I grew up in Shrewsbury and graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School. My university education began at Villanova University where I earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology. From there I went to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey where I received my Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. I subsequently did my three-year Specialty Residency in Orthodontics and graduated from the School of Biomedical Sciences with a Masters of Science degree in Oral Biology.
As a strong believer in continuing education and having served as a board member of the New Jersey Association of Orthodontics (NJAO), I regularly attend the NJAO Continuing Dental Education series and also attend annual American Association of Orthodontists conferences. By attending regular continuing education courses I’m able to stay informed about the latest research and innovative treatments in orthodontics. It helps me to better treat my patients in an efficient manner and achieve treatment results that my patients and I can be proud of.

Family and Community
I am married and have a daughter and a son. When I’m not working I love to read great fiction novels, watch movies, play the piano, garden and do home remodeling projects with my husband, go on family hikes, bicycle rides, and road trips. Lately, a lot of my free time has been spent cheering for my children as they play basketball.
Giving back to my community is important to me because it is an opportunity to assist others. If I can put a smile on someone’s face by being helpful and doing a kind act I am fulfilled. In this regard, I am a lector at my church. I also provide pro bono treatment to underprivileged patients through the American Association of Orthodontists Donated Services Program.
Along with my passion for my family and helping my community, I am a truly happy person because of the interaction I have with my interesting and genuinely kind patients.
